Hey there, Steven here. I have a confession to make: I really enjoy zombie films. I know it's bad: they're disgusting, violent, and truthfully, pretty depraved. Still, there is something about these mostly low-budget movies that I really like. Let me see if I can talk my way out of this one...
I saw a good zombie flick tonight with some friends. I had a blast. And to think: I almost didn't go! It's not that I didn't want to, but there are some really heavy things happening around me tonight and I was feeling some of the weight of that. I'm glad I went.
I think there's something very healthy about being scared. You're anxiously waiting for the terrifying moment to happen, having all your emotions pent up, about to explode, and unlike real life, they get immediately released! Sure, someone winds up with their head lopped off, but the worst is over! The bundled tension is dispersed; the anticipatory moment of the cadence resolves.
I walked out of that theater laughing and feeling relieved. No, the problems around me didn't go away necessarily, but I feel better. We all know that scientific studies show that laughter is great medicine. I think that being scared (read: the release of anxiety and fear) is also good for us.
Maybe the flesh-consuming living dead aren't your thing, but there is something about movies that allow us to suspend our realities and release things in a healthy way. They let us enter into someone else's drama and we get to experience all their minor chords resolve (unless you're watching something depressing like "The Departed," where everyone dies). There is incredible power in storytelling.
So maybe I'm actually onto something; maybe I'm just be denying my own depravity. The thesis is this: I like a good zombie flick. Do I have a valid point?
Steven
PS: I think I would last for quite awhile as the living amongst the dead. I took a quiz on Facebook that proved it.
